At Southland, we believe that Spiritual Growth happens best when we live With Jesus, In Community, and On Mission. When it comes to Student Ministry, our goals are the same. During the school year, we are able to intentionally create an environment for students to grow With Jesus and In Community every week during Southland Students. But during the Summer, we have a unique opportunity to take living On Mission to the next level through a 5 day Mission Trip to Cincinnati. This past week, we were able to take a team of 29 Middle School Students and an additional 9 leaders to partner with BLOC Ministries (onebloc.org) as they sacrificially serve the urban communities of Price Hill.
Our teams were able to build a privacy fence, clear out a fallen tree, and transform the inside and backyard of a home intended for girls living in unhealthy situations. We played with and showed love to underserved kids at several after-school programs, helped prepare and serve food at a food pantry/soup kitchen, and had conversations/prayed for homeless residents, and more. In addition, we got to serve each other, pray for each other, and learn how to continue to serve others and live on mission when we got home.
Words cannot express how proud I am of all of the students and leaders for not only giving up a week of their summer to go and serve strangers but for doing it with such grace, humility and joy. This annual trip is one of my favorites to lead because it confirms and combines 2 of my callings - serving others and leading students. Though I am physically drained after this trip, I am spiritually renewed because I get to see first hand what it looks like when 11-14-year-olds take Jesus’ call to serve others seriously and live it out.
If you (parent, student, or anyone in between) would like to learn more about our partnership with BLOC Ministries or are ready to take the next step of living On Mission through a short-term local Mission Trip, please reach out and let me know.
