Preparing Kids for Move Up Sunday
May 17, 2019

It’s hard to believe but it’s almost time for our kids to move up to their next age or grade level in Children’s Ministry. Sunday, June 2 is Move Up Sunday, and we want to make sure that it’s a great experience for your family.

New faces and places can be hard for kids, but there are three things you can do to make it a smooth transition for your children.

1. Know where to go.
Just knowing which room your child will be in will take a lot of stress out of Move Up Sunday.  For some kids they will simply be moving to a new group or breakout room in the same environment they already attend. Other kids will be moving to a whole new environment.

  • Design Studio: Children in Design Studio will not change rooms on Move Up Sunday unless they are moving up to Animation Station. Talk to your campus Children’s Pastor about when younger children may change rooms (based on development or birthday) at your campus.
  • Animation Station: Children who are fully potty-trained and will be three by August 1 will move up to our Animation Station preschool environment.
  • Drive-In: Children who will be attending kindergarten through second grade in the fall will go to our Drive-In environment.  A communion station will be available for Drive-In parents who want to serve their kids communion before or after service.  This is a special way for kids who have chosen to follow Jesus and be baptized to remember Him.
  • Backlot: Children who will be attending third through fifth grade in the fall will go to our Backlot environment.  In the Backlot environments, we serve communion as a part of the Sunday worship service.
  • Sixth Graders: Students who are entering sixth grade in the fall will promote out of Children’s Ministry the first Sunday in June and can attend Southland Students on Sunday or Wednesday nights depending on your campus. On Sunday mornings, students who are sixth grade and older are encouraged to attend the adult service with their family. Check the Student Ministry page for more information about when Middle School students meet at your location.
  • Campus-Specific Details:
    • Lexington and Nicholasville: If you attend the Lexington or Nicholasville campus, your child may attend the same environment but may be bumping up to the next breakout room. Usually this is an easy transition, but some kids will need extra attention to ease their fears about going to a new room.
    • Georgetown: 3rd-5th graders at the Georgetown will attend the Drive-In until we open our permanent campus, which will include a Backlot environment.
    • Danville: Families at our Danville campus will not be promoting to new rooms (except for 6th graders moving out of Backlot) because of the room adjustments we made earlier this year to accommodate growth.

No matter which campus you attend, if your child is not going to move up to the next grade or if you have an older preschooler who will not be attending kindergarten in the fall, please let us know by emailing childrens@southland.church.

2. Arrive early.
Getting to church on time can be a major challenge when you have kids, but arriving early for Move Up Sunday will make your child’s day much easier.  This will give you plenty of time to find where your child will go, help them connect with their Small Group Leader and friends and drop them off without having to rush off to service.

If your child is moving up to a new environment, you may even want to consider taking them to visit before or after service one Sunday in May, just so they can see where they will be going and have some time to get excited about it.  If you would like, our campus staff would be happy to show you around.

Also, if your child has a special need, please communicate that in advance to your Children’s Ministry campus staff before Move Up Sunday to give them time to think through how they can best serve your family.  The transition between environments can be particularly challenging to kids with special needs.

3. Make it fun.
Take the time to make Move Up Sunday a fun moment for your child.  Kids take their cues from the adults in their lives, so if you are nervous or hesitant about your child’s new environment, they may pick up on this and be anxious too.

If your child is moving to a new environment, tell them how awesome it’s going to be and take pictures of them by the door of their new room.  If your child is going to be the oldest age or grade in their environment this year, tell them how special it be for them to be the leader and example to the other kids.

On the other hand, some children will do better if you don’t make a big deal out of moving to a new room.  If that’s your child, just play it cool and treat Move Up Sunday like any other day and minimize the changes they might experience.

The good news is that all of our environments follow the same basic order of service: connect time, large group worship and teaching, small group time and check-out.  It may look and feel a little different, but you can assure your child they will be doing the same things in the same order as they always have.

If you have further questions about Move Up Sunday, see a Children’s Ministry staff person at your campus or email us at childrens@southland.church.  Be sure to include which campus you attend in your email.  We are praying for your family to have a great new season in the Big Picture Show.
