It’s hard to believe but it’s almost time for our kids to move up to their next age or grade level in Children’s Ministry. Sunday, June 2 is Move Up Sunday, and we want to make sure that it’s a great experience for your family.
New faces and places can be hard for kids, but there are three things you can do to make it a smooth transition for your children.
1. Know where to go.
Just knowing which room your child will be in will take a lot of stress out of Move Up Sunday. For some kids they will simply be moving to a new group or breakout room in the same environment they already attend. Other kids will be moving to a whole new environment.
No matter which campus you attend, if your child is not going to move up to the next grade or if you have an older preschooler who will not be attending kindergarten in the fall, please let us know by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
2. Arrive early.
Getting to church on time can be a major challenge when you have kids, but arriving early for Move Up Sunday will make your child’s day much easier. This will give you plenty of time to find where your child will go, help them connect with their Small Group Leader and friends and drop them off without having to rush off to service.
If your child is moving up to a new environment, you may even want to consider taking them to visit before or after service one Sunday in May, just so they can see where they will be going and have some time to get excited about it. If you would like, our campus staff would be happy to show you around.
Also, if your child has a special need, please communicate that in advance to your Children’s Ministry campus staff before Move Up Sunday to give them time to think through how they can best serve your family. The transition between environments can be particularly challenging to kids with special needs.
3. Make it fun.
Take the time to make Move Up Sunday a fun moment for your child. Kids take their cues from the adults in their lives, so if you are nervous or hesitant about your child’s new environment, they may pick up on this and be anxious too.
If your child is moving to a new environment, tell them how awesome it’s going to be and take pictures of them by the door of their new room. If your child is going to be the oldest age or grade in their environment this year, tell them how special it be for them to be the leader and example to the other kids.
On the other hand, some children will do better if you don’t make a big deal out of moving to a new room. If that’s your child, just play it cool and treat Move Up Sunday like any other day and minimize the changes they might experience.
The good news is that all of our environments follow the same basic order of service: connect time, large group worship and teaching, small group time and check-out. It may look and feel a little different, but you can assure your child they will be doing the same things in the same order as they always have.
If you have further questions about Move Up Sunday, see a Children’s Ministry staff person at your campus or email us at email@example.com. Be sure to include which campus you attend in your email. We are praying for your family to have a great new season in the Big Picture Show.
