Sometimes we don’t think that we have much to offer. We don’t think we have the skills or the experience we need that will help make a difference. We assume we aren’t ready to step out and take a risk like a mission trip to a developing country.
That’s exactly how I felt when I stepped on the plane headed to Ouanaminthe, Haiti for the first time. Bible Camp was about to start and I had no idea how God was going to use me... or what I even had to give the people I would encounter. But sometimes God loves to surprise and bless us in a way we never saw coming.
The kids I encountered that week - and the times I’ve gone back since - didn’t care one bit about my expertise or lack thereof. They didn’t care where I lived or what my job was or what kind of car I drove. They didn’t care how I ended up on the trip or what it took for me to arrange things at home while I was gone.
What did they care about? That I looked them in the eyes and smiled. That I sang and danced with them. And what did they want? To play with my hair and touch my bug-spray-sticky skin and laugh at me as I tried to speak Haitian Creole. And to tell me about their families and friends and favorite things.
You don’t need skills or experience for this kind of ministry. You just need a heart open to what God has in store. The best part is, a heart that is open - even a little - when it steps on the plane to leave, will be bursting open with the contagious love, joy, and contentment of a beautiful people when you return home.
What are you waiting for? Open your heart to what God has in store! It is His work to do - and what a blessing you will receive in the process!
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9 NIV
