Counterfeit: Femininity — Monday

Proverbs 31:30
Charm is deceptive and beauty does not last; but a woman who fears the Lord will be greatly praised
. (NLT)

God values women. That point is made abundantly clear throughout scripture. From the creation of man, throughout Jesus’ ministry, and after Pentecost, women are consistently loved, valued, listened to, and relied upon. They are also taught, corrected, and held accountable. The idea of femininity has become such a hot topic with lines becoming more and more blurred, and the only way to combat the chaos is to return to the truth: what Scripture says.

This week, in each of our devos, we’re going to take a look at instances that teach us about the role of women in the redemption story that God is telling; not to overemphasize the role of women in Scripture, but to show that God created men and women in the beginning for His purpose. First, he created man with all his strengths, capabilities, and skills, then created woman to complement man and be a helper. By looking at how God created Adam and Eve in Genesis, we can see that it takes both to reflect the image of God fully. They are different, but they complement one another through divine design.

Before we look at specific stories throughout Scripture, I want to look today at what a godly woman is. I can remember being at my grandmother’s funeral and hearing the pastor read through Proverbs 31 and citing the various ways in which it reflected who my grandmother was. He was right. She was a godly woman who loved her family, served others, and chased after Jesus.

If you haven’t already, take a moment to read Proverbs 31:10-31. A godly woman is described as trustworthy. She is faithful. She is gentle but not passive. She works hard. She is smart. She is business-minded. She is creative. She is strong, and she is joyful. She is wise and corrects with love. Here’s why I love this so much: these are also characteristics of God. He is trustworthy, faithful, gentle but not passive, smart, creative, strong, joyful, wise, corrects with love and compassion… this is how, among other ways, a woman can reflect the character of God. Pair a godly woman with a godly man and that beautiful picture is the image of our Creator!

Monday’s Reflection

Take a minute to thank God for the characteristics He holds and the way he uses men and women to reflect those. Pray that He will bring those same characteristics and qualities to the forefront of your own life.
