Deconstruction: The Foundation - Monday

This Week’s Verse

2 Timothy 3:16-17

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” (NIV)

I grew up in the Church as a pastor’s kid. The PK life ingrains you with all sorts of random songs and Bible memory techniques that can be somewhat niche to being raised in a church setting. From VeggieTales to Adventures in Odyssey, I was immersed in so much that taught me about the love of Jesus and the truth of the Gospel through stories and songs. However, one thing I loved more than anything else was singing the songs I heard either from church or my parents. Around the age of 2 or 3, I would waddle around our parsonage and belt out with gusto, “The B-I-B-L-E! Yes, that’s the Book for me! I stand alone on the Word of God, the B-I-B-L-E!”

I can guarantee you I had no idea what those words meant when I was a toddler. But I do know that through that song, I was learning about the authority of Scripture, even without consciously realizing it. Now, as an adult, I love God’s Word. It’s a book of unfailing truth, unrelenting grace, unmatched authority, and undying hope. It showcases the weight and glory of Jesus’ sacrifice for us and is an essential tool for us to understand more of who He is and what He’s done. We can also trust the authority of Scripture because it reflects the One who holds authority over everything. Hebrews 4:12 (NLT) says, “For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.” It’s more than a set of guidelines and rules! Through His Word, our Father extends an invitation to us to really know Him - an opportunity for creation to commune with the Creator and receive conviction and clarity from the Holy Spirit.

Reflection

What is your relationship with the Bible? Do you see it as a set of rules and regulations to live by? Do you see it as the living, breathing Word of God? Take some time this morning and ask the Lord to reveal any ways you’ve been struggling to see Him rightly through His Word. Ask Him to help you trust what He speaks through Scripture.
