Today’s Verse
Psalm 133:1
How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity! (NIV)
One of my favorite verses in the Bible is Galatians 3:28: “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” I love this verse because it reaffirms boldly that our identity is found in Christ. It doesn’t matter our occupation, our ancestry, our skin color, our gender, or anything else. What matters is that we put our hope and faith in Jesus Christ. Because of this, we can agree to disagree about other matters, but we can’t disagree when it comes to Jesus.
It’s tempting to misinterpret this verse and think that when the Bible talks about unity, it means union. However, unity is not union. God doesn’t expect Christians to look the same, dress the same, talk the same as one big union. In fact, it’s the opposite! At Southland, we have people from all different backgrounds, nationalities, ethnicities, fans of different sports teams, etc. Even with our differences, God makes it very clear that it is a good thing when His people live in unity. What unity means is despite our differences we are under one faith in Jesus and one goal to reach lost and broken people with the Gospel.
