Plugged In: His Power Over Creation
By: Chapman Bean
1 minute read

Joshua 10:12-13 On the day the Lord gave the Amorites over to Israel, Joshua said to the Lord in the presence of Israel: “Sun, stand still over Gibeon, and you, moon, over the Valley of Aijalon.” So the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, till the nation avenged itself on its enemies, as it is written in the Book of Jashar. The sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full day. (NIV)

Joshua is one of the coolest characters in the Bible because the Lord used him in powerful ways. Joshua was tasked with leading the Israelites into the Promised Land, something that Moses was not able to do. This was no easy task, but the Lord was always with Joshua. God tells Joshua in Joshua 1:9, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” (NIV)

As we learned from Scott this past Sunday, storms, winds, and waves obey the voice of God. When Joshua asked the Lord for the sun and the moon to stand still, God made it happen. This story goes on in Joshua 10:14 to say that a day like that had never happened before. A prayer like that had never been answered, but God powerfully answered Joshua’s prayer. What God did that day was a response to the Israelite people to drive home the truth that He was with them and fighting for them in a mighty and powerful way.

I doubt that God will stop the sun and moon in place today if we ask Him, but He doesn’t have to do that for us to know He is with us. He did something a million times better than stopping the sun in its place: He sent His one and only Son down from His Heavenly place to dwell among us and die for all of our mistakes. That’s power.

If you’ve accepted the grace of Jesus, be strong and courageous today, believer. You have everything you need to be bold, confident, and strong because of what God has done for you. Jot down a few things that keep you from living in the confidence and strength of the Father. Ask God to reveal His victory over those things.
