Anyone who’s often around kids has noticed most kids believe that a band-aid and a kiss is a quick fix for their bump or scrape. For my daughter, it was the neon-green aloe vera gel designed for sunburns. At some point, we must have put some on a boo-boo because that was what we had nearby. In her mind, it made her feel better. Soon, it was her go-to for everything. This worked well for us for a while, but eventually, she began to see things more realistically.
Just like a child, we often look to something that makes us feel better in the moment but doesn’t really solve our problem. Maybe we turn to a relationship or our job to fulfill us—to distract us from our true need to be reconciled to God. Maybe we turn to drugs, or alcohol, or food to dull our thinking.
The good news is that Jesus has solved your problem, by being the sacrifice for your sins. You don’t have to do anything other than believe and follow Him to receive the one thing you need more than anything for all eternity—your sin to be erased so that you can stand before a Holy God and be welcomed into His family.
Jesus is the only solution. His sacrificial death on the cross, although He lived a sinless life, is God’s answer to your sin problem. Everything else is just a fake neon-green bottle of temporary fixes that will distract you from your real need and the real answer.
What have you allowed in your life as an insufficient substitute for Jesus? Make a list of things that distract you from Jesus, things that you look to for answers instead of Him. Pray through this list, and ask God to help you put things in their proper place and replace them with Jesus.
