Wildfire: The Frustration of Moses

Numbers 20:8 Take the staff, and you and your brother Aaron gather the assembly together. Speak to that rock before their eyes and it will pour out its water. (NIV)

It was July 1999, the World Cup championship, and the USA women's soccer team was in a shootout against China. The final kick of the shootout went to Brandi Chastain. She placed the ball, aimed for the corner, and watched in slow-motion as the ball hit the net. The crowd went wild! USA WINS!!

You might have watched this World Cup game 21 years ago, but what you might not have known was that before the shootout, head coach Tony DiCicco asked Brandi to take the penalty kick with her left foot. He thought her right footed shot was too predictable and changing her foot would surprise the China goalkeeper. Brandi listened to his advice and in the end it could have been one of the contributing factors for USA getting the World Cup victory.

Remember in Exodus 17 when God told Moses to strike a rock to bring water out for the people to drink? Fast forward in the Bible to Numbers 20 and Moses is in a similar predicament. His people are thirsty and complaining again but this time the Lord gives Moses a different plan. God tells Moses to speak to the rock to bring out the water. However, Moses strikes the rock twice with his staff instead. He didn’t listen and just did what he did before, hoping it would have the same effect again. And the thing is, it worked. Water gushed out from the rock and the community had enough water to drink. But it wasn’t how God wanted him to do it. Because he didn’t listen to God, and because he didn’t trust enough, he would no longer lead the people into the promised land.

God always has the best strategy and the best timing. You might have a certain way of doing something, but listen closely, because God may have a different plan for you this time. Don’t get in your same rhythms to where you can’t hear God’s voice instructing you to try something new or different.

In what areas of your life have you gotten a little bit comfortable? Spend some time in prayer asking God if there’s a new direction or strategy He might be leading you in.
