Are there any people in your life that are either impossible to schedule anything with, or that are just ridiculously schedule oriented? I overheard a conversation the other day where one person was trying to put together plans on short notice, and the other person said, “Don’t invite Jim—you know how scheduled he is; if you throw that out all willy-nilly, Jim will lose his mind.”
Consistency is a value we cherish, until the consistency comes in the form of a negative or inconvenient aspect of life. When extreme consistency becomes an identity or becomes the goal, we can find things difficult especially in relationships because we do not adapt. Healthy consistency is best illustrated by God. James 1 tells us there is no variation or shadow due to change. What vivid language! God’s provision in our life never changes, never weakens, and never shifts.
The provision we are promised as children of God is a gift we cannot comprehend which sometimes results in us resisting the gift. When we can’t grasp what is being offered, and accept that the offering doesn’t actually rely on us, we start to assume that the gift actually doesn’t apply to me—maybe everyone else can have it, but not me because I don’t deserve/understand/want the gift.
Here’s the true blessing of the gift we have in the Lord’s provision. The gift is a co-mission with Him that He is already performing in you. The Lord is on the move to reach the unreached, love the unloved, and redeem the unredeemed. The gift is the ability to partner with Him in that mission—a mission He will consistently, confidently, and perfectly complete.
