The Secret Sauce: Be Thankful in All Circumstances
By: Drew Metcalfe
1 minute read

1 Thessalonians 5:18 ...give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

This week, we are digging into thankfulness as a lifestyle. At the surface level, if you’re anything like me, you receive this command as a good reminder to be grateful. You’ve probably forgotten to appreciate the good things as much as you should. Maybe you’ve recently gotten a new job or a new house, or maybe you have good health for the first time in a while. Perhaps things are getting back on track, and you just need to be thankful for a new norm and a new baseline of contentment.

For me, I’m thankful for the turkey and gravy that we had last week. More specifically, I’m thankful for the non-dry turkey my family had—what a miracle! I’m thankful for macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes, dinner rolls, and ham. I’m thankful for having days and days of leftovers. And mostly I’m thankful for a good excuse to enjoy all of those things and more without having to feel too guilty because, after all, it’s Thanksgiving! I’m thankful for my family. I’m thankful for my church. The list goes on and on.

These are all great things, and today, I want us to focus on the reminder to emphasize thankfulness in the mundane. There’s no greater practice for equipping ourselves to handle the lows of life than strengthening our equilibrium of thankfulness in the good seasons. When we create patterns in our lives to continually appreciate the mundane, we set ourselves up for sustained gratitude in the valleys, along with an amplified experience of those blessings that exceed the mundane.

Today, let’s remember what it looks like to appreciate the small things that we’ve started to take for granted. Thank the Lord for that today in prayer, and reflect on 1 Thessalonians 5:18.
