The Secret Sauce: Be Thankful in All Circumstances

Psalm 118:1 Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever! (ESV)

Thankfulness in all circumstances can be a double-edged sword. On one hand, our inclination can be to think we just need a slight refocus, and then we can start taking ground toward being thankful more frequently. On the other hand, when we think about how to maintain thankfulness during the storms of life, it can seem like a nearly impossible task. So, what gives? How do we recapture the equilibrium in our life to make both the mundane and the storms reflect a life of thankfulness?

Capturing scripture in our hearts may be the trick. Proverbs 3:21-24 tells us this in regard to scripture: “My son, do not lose sight of these—keep sound wisdom and discretion, and they will be life for your soul and adornment for your neck.  Then you will walk on your way securely, and your foot will not stumble. If you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.” This scripture caps off our discussion this week pretty remarkably. When we “write” scripture on our hearts, we are providing the life and foundation for thankfulness in all circumstances. We will walk through life with the thankful heart we have developed with His help, enjoying and remarking on the creation around us, to the point where we can lie down in sweet rest.

I, for one, look forward to practicing thankfulness that produces a life full of peace and rest. With all the noise of our world, thankfulness can seem washed out and a lost art. Small, grateful efforts will produce abundant fruit that can propel our life and sustain our endeavors. When we are trying to grow, it can sometimes seem like we need to grow a little all by ourselves first, before the Father should be asked to come alongside. But in reality, He is ever-ready to immediately partner with us in our growth, and He generously offers many promises to us when we make genuine efforts toward a life of wisdom.

Read James 1:5. Reflect on the promise that when wisdom is asked for, it is given. Pray today for the wisdom to know next steps toward a life that is thankful in all circumstances, and ask God to begin that process with you.
