Luke 2:12-14 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger. Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.” (NIV)

Even on the most amazing birthday of all time, there was a specter in the midst of it. Hidden in the text are a few simple words that would have left the shepherds, well… scratching their heads. A “sign” means they would be seeing something unusual, something they likely would never have seen.

I’ve always thought that the unusual aspect of this part of the story was that the baby would be located lying in a manger. Not so.

“You will find the baby wrapped in cloths...” Some versions say “swaddling cloths.” When you and I think of swaddling, we think of fuzzy little blankets printed with ducks and chicks that smell like baby powder. Swaddling cloths were actually strips of white linen… used to bury the dead. Whaaaat?

These shepherds were told to go find a baby wrapped up in dead men’s clothes, lying in a livestock trough.

Weirdest. Birthday. Clues. Ever.

Sometimes our greatest blessings still have reality attached to them, don’t they?

In your life, have your blessings ever been mixed with something difficult to understand or deal with? Take a moment to focus on the blessing part, and thank the Lord in a prayer.

I want to challenge you to memorize 2 Corinthians 9:15 this week: Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!
