Deuteronomy 12:7 "…you and your families will feast in the presence of the Lord your God, and you will rejoice in all you have accomplished because the Lord your God has blessed you." (NLT)

Sometimes you just have to throw a party. You gather all the pieces you can pull together and just plain celebrate. It’s been said, “Moderation in all things, including moderation.” The sentiment has been attributed to Benjamin Franklin, G. K. Chesterton, Petronius, and more… but, more importantly, it’s demonstrated in scripture.

God invites and even instructs His people to pool their resources at certain times, and tells them to throw a party to celebrate His kindness and goodness. We see celebrations of the various feasts described in the Bible that remind us of—and even sometimes invite us to reenact—the miraculous movement of God. By observing times of celebration, we remember His protection and the way He provides for His people. And not just the feasts… consider the example of Jesus! He’s the visible image of the invisible God… and He is regularly found at parties and gatherings. His teaching implies that we will throw parties, even as He gives us some countercultural advice on how to grow the guest list!

Celebration is all part of anchoring us in seasonal reminders to celebrate His deliverance, protection, guidance, and more. If anyone else in the world is as forgetful as I am, it’s no surprise God knew we’d need these reminders. But of all the things we could celebrate, what greater gift has ever been given than that of Jesus?

I hope you were able to enjoy the celebration of Christmas this past week—maybe you’re still hosting and attending gatherings with friends and family to celebrate the season. But, you know what? The greatest gift ever given is worth celebrating as often as you gather… whether it’s worship on Sunday, sharing a meal with a friend, or gathering with your small group. Remember all God has done for us, proving how deeply loved we really are.

Need an excuse to throw a party? God sent Jesus as the sacrifice to take away all our sin and to welcome us into His family forever through belief and trust in Him. Use each opportunity you have to gather and remember to celebrate God’s greatest gift of all: Jesus.
