Psalm 13:1-2 How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? How long must I wrestle with my thoughts and day after day have sorrow in my heart? (NIV)

Boy oh boy, do I resonate with today’s verse! I’m sure you do, too.

A few years ago, I was diagnosed with a stomach disorder called gastroparesis, which resulted in a significant hit to my physical and emotional health for about two years. After a long journey of navigating the maze of healthcare options, I was deemed a good candidate for a surgery at Cleveland Clinic that enabled my stomach to function better, and l am so, so grateful to be on the other side of that road.

But the in-between… 95 pounds, barely able to eat, no strength or energy, and feeling generally miserable for two years with little hope of a solution… that was when I, too, cried: How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever? And while my gastroparesis symptoms are much more manageable now, health issues seem to be the consistent thorn in my side, as a few other diagnoses have come along in the years since—nothing too serious, but certainly frustrating. Now, I know I have it so good compared to some, and trust me when I say how grateful I am to have easy access to incredible healthcare. But despite all that, I’d be lying if I said I no longer cry, How long, Lord? Why me? This isn’t fair.

I don’t pretend to understand what you’ve gone through or are currently experiencing. And in no way am I an expert on how to navigate suffering or understand it theologically. But if you’re in any type of pain right now, one piece of advice I’d love to give you from personal experience is this: Be honest with God.

Not only will this help you release what’s bubbling inside of you, but He wants your honesty. So tell Him exactly how you feel, no matter how ugly it is. Cry, scream, whatever you need to do—trust me, He can take it. He can take the Why, God? over and over again. He can take your anger, even if it’s toward Him. He can take your doubts of His goodness and character. He wants to hear it all, so He can meet you right in the middle of your pain. And I promise you, He will do just that—every time.

What do you need to be honest with Him about today? Don’t worry what He’ll think about it. Give Him the raw, the ugly, the real stuff. He already knows it. So talk to Him, even if you don’t feel like it right now. I promise you won’t regret it.
