Beautiful Fences: God Still Reigns
By: Kelly Hill
1 minute read

Isaiah 9:7b He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. (NIV)

My friends recently welcomed twin babies into the world. They were expecting for the first time and decided to be surprised by the gender of the babies. We couldn’t wait to find out if they were boys or girls, but the parents were so certain that they were going to have boys that they didn’t even pick out girl names until the night before the babies would be born. They decided they probably should have girl names ready just in case. And wouldn’t you know it… Two beautiful baby girls arrived the next day.

It’s fun to make predictions at baby showers about the baby’s arrival. Everyone guesses what day the baby will be born, if the baby will look more like mom or dad, and how much he or she will weigh. We can get competitive with our guesses, thinking we have it all figured out, but are often surprised by how wrong we were.

I imagine this being similar when the Israelites read prophecies about Jesus’ arrival. I can picture them sitting around making predictions about the promised king. “I bet he’s going to come on a horse with a sword!” or “I bet he’s 7 feet tall and is crazy strong.”

Yet Jesus was born in a stable. His parents were ordinary. He was a carpenter. And he didn’t ride a magnificent horse, but a lowly donkey. Jesus was not exactly the king that the Israelites were expecting. But He was the King we would need. He constantly intrigued people and left the crowds in awe. Jesus throws our expectations out the window in the best way possible.

God is faithful. He doesn’t always come through in the ways we would expect or even the ways we might choose. Surrender any expectations you’re putting on God to solve your problems in your own way, trusting that His plans are the best plans for you.
