The Countdown — Monday
Philippians 2:6-8
Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross. (NLT)
Happy New Year from the team here at Southland!
Like it or not, it’s that time for everyone to talk about the “R” word… resolutions. It’s cliché, I know. But since it’s timely, let’s look at some things we can resolve to do as we kick off a new year, based on the example Jesus set for us.
“…he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to.”
This year with the high school boys I lead, we’ve been diving into the complex topic of identity. The deluge of misinformation, peer pressure, and lies is ever-occurring in their lives, and it presents an enormous challenge for them in a season of their life where everyone feels confused, self-conscious, and insecure. It’s so challenging for them and all kids today.
The interesting thing is that if we aren’t careful, we collect various things that feel like solid ground for our identity to hinge upon—achievements, family, career, hobbies—and move on into adulthood clinging. But we may not even realize it. Potentially out of habit, coping, or perhaps pride, somewhere along the way, we all have propped something up as a cornerstone of our identity that shouldn’t be there.
Even still, if we’re honest, those cornerstones are more like crutches, and when difficult circumstances arise, we start to waver and wonder. You know who I don’t see tossed about, no matter what life throws at them? Humble people who cherish the opportunity to serve others. Uncomplicated, unabashed servants. Humility was a cornerstone of who Jesus was, and it was apparent in His actions, interactions, and mission.
Does humility and service clash with the identity you’ve assembled for yourself and cling to? What if, as a part of embracing our identity in Christ, we start finding ways to pursue cling-worthy attributes like “humble servant” this year?
Monday’s Reflection
Thanks for starting the year off with time focused on Jesus and growing in your faith! On behalf of our devo team, we really appreciate the privilege of sharing what we’re learning and reflecting on with you. Today, I encourage you to take a step in humility and service and tell someone about these devotions and how they help you—it’s a practical and accessible step in sharing your faith and helping others grow in theirs!
