Road Warriors: John the Baptist—A Message of Repentance - Friday
Romans 5:1
Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. (NIV)
I remember watching a film titled The Da Vinci Code. Honestly, I didn’t think it was that great, so please don’t take this as my official recommendation. But one of the characters was a monk named Silas, and there were several scenes that graphically depicted him punishing himself every time he sinned. He would brutally whip his own back and hurt himself because he felt he had to justify himself for his sin. I can’t say I have engaged in such behavior, but I have tried to serve God out of guilt for my sin. How many Christians, like me, have lived their lives trying to do something that has already been done for them?
The truth is, faith is the only way you and I can enter into a relationship with God. You and I cannot do for ourselves what only Jesus could and has already done for us. If you have put your faith in the finished work of Christ on the cross, then there is nothing you have to or can do to earn God’s love. Any feelings of guilt, shame, or drivenness to do things to earn God’s love comes from Satan, not God. The enemy wants you to believe that Christ’s work wasn’t enough, but that is a lie. This is why Galatians 2:16 says, “Know that a person is not justified by the works of the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ...”
We read yesterday that Jesus was the Lamb of God. His sacrifice was perfect, and enough to cover ALL sins. If you are trying to earn God’s love or make yourself worthy to receive His gift, can I encourage you today to stop? Friend, God is not asking that from you, so why are you still trying? Today is the day to start living for Jesus! Not because you feel guilty, but because He loves you. That is enough.
Friday’s Reflection
Even John the Baptist had to believe, receive, and express his gift of salvation. If you have not already, my invitation for you today is to do the same. Believe that Jesus’ work on the cross was enough to cover it all. Receive the free gift of salvation that was bought for you! Express your salvation through baptism and serving God out of joy, not guilt. If you have already made this choice, I challenge you to pray for someone who needs to hear the gospel message. If you feel that your relationship with someone will allow you to have a conversation with them about Jesus, then do that today!
