Counter Culture: Teach One Another — Tuesday

Romans 15:14
I am fully convinced, my dear brothers and sisters, that you are full of goodness. You know these things so well you can teach each other all about them. (NLT)

I was recently asked by our middle school ministry staff if I would be willing to come and speak to a gathering of middle school small group leaders. I was so grateful for the opportunity! I began my talk by asking everyone why they had chosen to serve middle school students. Truthfully, what I asked was, “Why IN THE WORLD would you want to serve middle school students?!” The prevailing theme of their responses mostly had to do with experiences they had as middle schoolers themselves. Some spoke of just the normal challenges at that stage of life. One young woman said she decided to serve because she had inconsistent leaders when she was in middle school and remembered how difficult that was. She wanted middle school girls to be able to count on her in a way that was much different from her own experience. I was so moved by the responses.

Although my message to the group leaders could have involved tips on how to make middle schoolers put down their phones during small group, quit talking and pay attention, or be more respectful, I felt strongly led to say something else. Twice in the New Testament, during very defining moments in Jesus’ life, we see the Father affirming His Son by telling Him that He loves Him and is pleased with Him. Honestly, these are the words every human being longs to hear and needs to hear. If a middle schooler gets that message, they may actually start to believe I’m seen, I’m believed in, I matter, and I’m here for a reason. That God gives us the ability and opportunity to communicate these things to others is such a gift!

Our message Sunday challenged us to think about the role we play in each other’s formation and growth in Christ. And, as Paul reminds us in today’s verse, what we have to offer others is directly tied to how much we allow the Spirit to grow us from within.

Tuesday’s Reflection

I can personally guarantee that there will be someone you encounter today who could use your perspective and encouragement. As you grow in Christ, draw from that goodness within you and give it to others.
