Counter Culture: Pray For One Another — Monday

Philippians 4:6-7
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (NIV)

As I write this, my wife is having her ninth surgery since being diagnosed with breast cancer on September 22, 2021. It’s been a long road. Diagnostics, chemo, radiation, scans, nausea, pain, anxiety, depression, anger, joy, peace, God. We’ve been through it all. I say “we,” but really, Amy has endured the most. My job has been to drive the van, carry the bags, and pray. I’ve learned a lot about prayer since all of this started, but mostly that prayer doesn’t have to be perfect.

I’ve hung on to Philippians 4:6-7 as a foundation during this time. It tells me that if I pray with thankfulness, I can have peace. How can you be thankful during cancer? You look around you, see what is important, and watch what’s not start to fade. Money doesn’t matter, stuff doesn’t matter, social media doesn’t matter (in fact, I stopped using it). I thank God for my family, His provision, a good job, and a safe place to rest. This helps me realize that God’s got this and I don’t have to. That is peace!

When someone expresses a need, it’s easy to respond with “Sending thoughts and prayers,” but truthfully, that doesn’t really bring peace to the one in need. It usually means a shotgun prayer at best. Instead, take the time to talk, listen, and really pray. Pray with them, pray when you are away from them, and pray continually. Help them see what’s important, and remind them of the promise of Philippians 4:6-7.

*Update: Although Amy is still in active treatment, we are grateful to say there is currently no evidence of disease in her body.

Monday’s Reflection

Who in your life needs your prayers and God’s peace? Reach out today and let them know you’re praying for them, and then take the time to really do it.
