A La Carte Christianity — Friday

Matthew 5:16
”In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.” (NLT)

You know how they always say word of mouth is the best form of advertising? It’s true. Think about it. How much more likely are you to try something if you know someone else who already loves it? I only decided to join my gym because I had a few other friends who tried it and loved it. We all look at the reviews on Amazon before we purchase things, and when traveling, we seek the advice of blogs and travel agents in addition to friends so we don’t miss anything and get the best deals.

It sounds weird to say, but the same applies to the church. You’re more likely to volunteer with a ministry area or join a group if you have friends or people you know who are currently involved. Your friends are more likely to come to church if you invite them and talk to them about it first. And they’re certainly more likely to volunteer if you already volunteer and share with them the joy you find in serving.

Unlike businesses that use word of mouth as a marketing tool, the goal here isn’t to convince people to try out a product. It’s to give them an opportunity to get closer to Jesus and experience the life change that believing in Him brings. It’s to help the world see that there is peace and contentment and healing available to them. It’s to help them find friends who will hold them accountable—friends to share true, authentic community with. It’s to show broken people that they are valued and seen and known and loved by their Creator.

When we keep in perspective the eternal impact that sharing the gospel and being on mission can make, we can’t help but serve joyfully and share our experience with others!

Friday’s Reflection

If you already serve or volunteer with us, what would it look like if you invited a few of your friends to join you? What kind of ripple effect could that have? If you don’t yet serve with us but have friends who do, ask them what their experience has been, or reach out to us to see how you can get plugged in!
