Born in a Barn: Jesus’ Messy Friends — Wednesday

Luke 10:41-42
“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
(NIV)

“It’s happening again!” Martha thought. “Mary is letting me do all of the work while she sits around listening to stories.” Martha liked a clean house and paid close attention to details. Her food not only had to taste good—it had to look good as well. If she’d had social media, this meal was going on her story. It was going to feed the Messiah, after all, and it would be perfect. But Mary... It would be nice if she would lend a hand! Clean up a little, take out the trash. At least set the table. But no... she was sitting at Jesus’ feet again. Listening intently to stories, ones she’d heard at least a hundred times before.

Is this what Christmas is for you? Perfect decorations, perfect food, clean house, beautifully wrapped presents? Does it frustrate you when others don’t prioritize your perfect Christmas the way you do? Even a “thank you” is hard to come by. Congratulations, you are one of Jesus’ messy friends.

Messy? We’re talking about clean and perfect! Yes, my friend—you are messy. You struggle, you get angry, your family’s lack of consideration for you leaves you annoyed. Perfectionism becomes your idol, and you miss the most important aspect of Christmas, Jesus. And it’s okay. Jesus came to enter into your mess, too (or lack thereof). So let Him. Spend time with Him. Listen to His story. Relax, rest, just be. Don’t worry so much about your lights, your tree, your food, your parties. Christmas will happen with or without these things. Don’t miss it.

Wednesday’s Reflection

This Christmas, slow down, watch a Christmas movie, go see the lights, read the Christmas story. Just be with your family, your friends, and Jesus.
