Counterfeit: Success — Monday
Ecclesiastes 1:14
I observed everything going on under the sun, and really, it is all meaningless-like chasing the wind. (NLT)
Ecclesiastes is one of my favorite books of the Bible. King Solomon is believed to be the author of Ecclesiastes, which makes this book all the more fascinating. He was wealthier than anyone ever has been or ever will be, he loved many women, and his wisdom surpassed that of everyone. In terms of how the world measures success, well King Solomon had it all; which means we can trust that he meant it when he said he “observed everything going on under the sun.”
I admire how blunt and authentic Solomon is as he describes life apart from God. Not only did he claim to observe everything and have it all, but he found it all to be meaningless! Meaningless?! How could that be?! How could someone have everything they want and still feel empty? From the world's perspective, it doesn’t make sense. Our culture tells us to ‘follow your heart,’ ‘chase your dreams,’ ‘Be successful,’ etc. Yet, the Bible tells us that pursuing all these things is ultimately meaningless.
If all this world has to offer is meaningless, the question then becomes ‘What is it that gives us meaning’? This is what we will unpack in this week's devotions. The truth is, we will only ultimately be fulfilled when we stand face to face with Jesus one day and hear the words ‘well done, good and faithful servant!’
