Were: Justified — Thursday
Romans 8:1
Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus… (NIV)
In 2017, a Louisville woman found $23,000 in her bank account that showed up out of nowhere. In an interview, she said, “I felt like I was in a Monopoly moment. Like getting the card that says bank error in your favor: Collect $200.” It was just that—a bank error—but unlike the game Monopoly, you don’t get to keep bank errors. She understood that, but unfortunately, a Georgia teen who received $30,000 in error did not. He spent the extra cash and ended up with 10 years in prison.
This week, we’ve talked about justification. The basis for this justification is that God’s righteousness is credited to our account. Our eternal punishment was paid because of Jesus Christ’s substitutionary (His life for ours) and propitiatory (paying our debt) death on the cross. We do not have to worry about Hell because our eternal debt has been paid and released (Romans 8:1)!
God’s accounting is perfect, but because of what Jesus did on the cross and our faith in that saving work, our account is credited with His righteousness. The result is that our sin debt has been paid. In the words of one of my favorite songs of all time, “Jesus paid it all!”
Thursday’s Reflection
We live without condemnation because Jesus paid it all. Let’s take some time today to rest in this truth by listening to or singing the song “Jesus Paid It All.”
