Dusk Til Dawn: The Waiting — Monday

Lamentations 3:25
The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him. (ESV)

“So, Connor… what exactly do you do?”

That was a loaded question. Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t always this difficult to answer. Just a few months prior, I could’ve responded in a number of ways.

Less than a year before, I was a banker—I wrote loans, helped people with their finances, and managed employees. I was a pastor—I led students, preached sermons, and helped plant a church. I was a host—I emceed events, worked on camera, and spoke at conferences. I could’ve said a lot of things a few months ago. Something. Anything. But there I was, twenty-eight years old with nothing to say.

Last summer, I left everything in Nashville behind and moved back home to Lexington. Southland had started a church planting movement across Kentucky, and God had spoken clearly: “Go help.

The help part made sense. The going seemed ridiculous. I had a great job, and there was no job opportunity awaiting me there—no concrete reason to help people understand. There were many days I didn’t understand it myself. Swallowing a lump in my throat, I danced around the question.

“Well, uh… I sort of help out with church planting and young adults...”

“Are you on staff?” No. “So you just moved up here to volunteer?” Yes. “So you don’t have a job?”

All these questions—what was this, Dateline?!

Eventually, I began to ask myself the same things—and question God. Was this really what He had in mind? Shouldn’t I look for an actual job? His response was always the same:

Wait.

Then one day, I got a phone call from a church in the Louisville area. Their lead pastor had recently passed away, and a mutual friend had given them my number. They wondered if I would be willing to come preach there every weekend for the next several months until they found a permanent replacement.

I was stunned. Me?

Choking back tears, I accepted the offer, shaking my head in disbelief.

“I see what you meant now, God. Wait.”

God continued to provide. I preached my final Sunday at that church almost six months later, and started my new job at Southland the next day (helping out with church planting and young adults became a full-time gig).

Waiting on the Lord is almost never easy, but our verse today reminds us of how good our God is to those who seek Him with an open heart and follow His plan.

In my experience, those plans have always been worth waiting for.

Monday’s Reflection

Have you ever felt God asking you to wait? How did He provide?
