Fine Print: Worship Wholeheartedly — Thursday

Matthew 22:37
Jesus replied, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’” (NLT)

The title of Sunday’s message and this week’s devotionals has been “Worship Wholeheartedly.”

I grabbed a trusty thesaurus and looked up synonyms for wholeheartedly. We could have used words like passionately, zealously, fervently, even arduously, if we were super fancy. But “wholeheartedly” is the right word. It’s right because God commands us to love Him with not some, but all of our heart.

One thing that has helped me worship God wholeheartedly is to acknowledge my limits and His unlimitedness. This adapted poem from pastor Paul Tripp hits the nail on the head:

I am limited in my humanity, the boundaries you’ve created.

I have limited wisdom.
I do not understand many things,
I am regularly unprepared, confused, and often surprised,
So much of what You know is unknown to me.

I have limits of time.
I will never have ten days in a week, 50 days in a month, or 500 days in a year,
My time is bound by morning and evening,
But You are outside the ticking clock.

I have limits of ability.
I am regularly confronted by my weaknesses,
There are so many things that I cannot do,
There is nothing that is impossible for You.

I have come to understand that my limits are a blessing and not a curse,
It is my limits that drive me into Your arms of grace,
It is my limits that make me grateful for You,
The awareness of my limits causes me to remember You.
My limits expose the delusion of my independence,
My limits work to silence my boasting,
The reality of my limits drives me to worship You.

Thursday’s Reflection

Whenever and wherever you are reading this, take the next few minutes to worship God wholeheartedly as you contemplate His unlimited qualities.
