Freedom — In the Spirit – Tuesday

TODAY’S VERSE

Galatians 5:16

But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. (ESV)

A few years ago, I went on a hike with a buddy who knew the trail far better than I did. At first, I treated it like I was on my own; I’d speed up when I felt good, lag behind when I got distracted (which happens a lot), and occasionally wandered off just to explore.

But over time, I realized something: the more I acted as my own guide, the more frustrated I became. I missed turns, wasted energy, and ended up going to places I didn’t intend to go.

Eventually, I adjusted. I stayed close, matched my buddy’s pace, and trusted his direction. And everything changed. Walking with a guide only works if you actually follow them. Walking with the Holy Spirit works the same way. It’s not about sprinting ahead or dragging behind; it’s about staying in step.

But some of us don’t live like we have a guide. We treat the Christian life like a solo journey. We set our own direction, make our own decisions, and only look back when we’re lost.

Paul’s command to “walk by the Spirit” isn’t abstract; it’s deeply practical. Walking by the Spirit means surrendering both your direction and your pace. It means trusting that the Holy Spirit knows where He’s leading you, even when you don’t fully understand the path. The Spirit isn’t hiding from you. He’s not trying to confuse you. His role is clear: to lead you to Jesus and make you more like Him.

The problem isn’t that He’s unclear; it’s that we’re often unwilling. Many of us don’t live like we have a guide. We make decisions, chase desires, set priorities… and then ask God to bless them afterward.

The Spirit isn’t an assistant to your plans. He’s your guide, and His primary goal is not to make your life easier; it’s to make you more like Jesus. That means He will lead you into things that stretch you. He will convict you when you’re drifting. He will redirect you when you’re off course.

Not to restrict you, but to free you.

The places your flesh leads you usually promise life, but always deliver emptiness.

Jesus said the Spirit would glorify Him (John 16). That means every step the Spirit leads you toward is a step closer to Christlikeness: toward life, joy, and peace.

The question is, are you keeping in step? Or are you trying to lead your own life?

APPLICATION

Before making decisions this week, even small ones, pause and ask, “Is this in step with the Spirit?”

Set a daily time to be in God’s Word. The Spirit leads through truth, not apart from it.

PRAYER

Lord, help me to walk in step with Your Spirit. Slow me down when I rush ahead and redirect me when I wander. Lead me closer to Jesus in every part of my life. Amen.
