Day at the Races: And Down the Stretch They Come! — Tuesday

Isaiah 46:4
I will be your God throughout your lifetime—until your hair is white with age. I made you, and I will care for you. I will carry you along and save you. (NLT)

There was a time not too long ago when I believed my hair would be its natural black color until the day I die. Maybe with a little Just For Men®, it could, but I’ve elected to gracefully welcome the gray. It was just recently that my wife noticed a gray hair on my head. If I’m being honest, there was a little part of me that didn’t want it to be true. It’s not that I necessarily care about my hair color, but I think the thought of aging scares me a little. Our culture places such a high value on youth and marks growing old as something to fear. There is so much pressure to hide wrinkles, stay lean in the gym, and keep up to date with the latest trends. However, God designed life in such a way that would lead us to full dependence on Him.

We can try our hardest to avoid aging, but eventually, we all grow old. I, for one, take great comfort in the knowledge that God has promised to sustain us even until our last breath. Just as much as God sees the youth, he sees the elderly. Every single person, regardless of age, has a need to be cared for that can only be fulfilled by God. As our bodies inevitably break down, God is readily available to be the caregiver we need. The truth is, He has always served in that role, regardless of if we have chosen to notice or not. Life is meant to be lived with God as our caretaker and sustainer. I see no other way that one can make it through this life without full dependence and trust in God’s power.

Tuesday’s Reflection

Read through today’s verse a few times, and allow the words of God to speak over you. Imagine the Lord speaking this verse directly to you, and ask for His help to depend on and trust in His good Word.
