Head Scratcher — Benaiah - Monday

Today’s Verse

1 Chronicles 11:22a

There was also Benaiah son of Jehoiada, a valiant warrior from Kabzeel. He did many heroic deeds. (NLT)

On Sunday, Jon introduced us to our next Head Scratcher character: Benaiah. His story is short—just a few lines tucked away in a long list of warriors in a dusty Old Testament book—but the content of those lines is unforgettable.

This guy killed two Moabite champions. He fought a giant Egyptian. And perhaps most famously—on a snowy day, Benaiah chased a lion into a pit… and killed it.

It’s bizarre. It’s wild. It’s a head-scratcher. But that’s exactly what this series has been about: the strange and often overlooked stories of Scripture that actually teach us deep, valuable lessons about God and faith.

We’re going to unpack Benaiah’s story throughout this week. Each day, we’ll look at one piece of his exploits and what it reveals about courage, boldness, faith, and fear. But for today, I want to ask a simple question: What kind of person does something like this?

What kind of man runs toward danger, not away from it?
What kind of faith fights when others would flee?

We don’t know if Benaiah felt confident or terrified in those moments. But we do know this: he didn’t run. He stepped in.

And maybe that’s what God is calling you to consider today. Maybe you’re not facing wild animals, but there may be things in your life that feel just as overwhelming. Internal battles. Lingering fear. A calling you’ve been ignoring. Or a conversation you’ve been avoiding. This week is about those moments—when faith means action, even when the conditions aren’t ideal.

If you missed the sermon on Sunday, make time to go watch or listen this week. You’ll get a helpful overview before we zoom in. And come back tomorrow—we’ll start climbing into the pit with Benaiah.

REFLECTION

As we begin this week, take 5–10 minutes today to reflect. When was the last time you did something bold in your faith? What’s something you feel God might be nudging you to do, but you’ve hesitated? Where in your life do you need courage right now?
