Head Scratcher — Mephibosheth - Friday

Today’s Verse

1 John 3:1a

See how very much our Father loves us, for he calls us his children, and this is what we are! (NLT)

In 2 Samuel 9, King David seeks to show kindness for the sake of his good friend Jonathan. He learns of Mephibosheth, Jonathan’s son, who is crippled in both feet. This led him to be seen as an outcast and hidden away after his father died. By all cultural standards, Mephibosheth had every reason to feel unworthy, but David saw someone to love. David summons Mephibosheth and speaks words that change his life: “Do not fear, for I will surely show you kindness... You shall always eat at my table” (2 Samuel 9:7).

We are all broken in some way: by sin, by shame, by past wounds. Like Mephibosheth, we often feel unworthy to approach the King. But God isn’t looking for perfection. He’s looking for hearts willing to receive His grace. Because of Jesus, we’re invited to sit at God’s table, not as strangers, but as sons and daughters.

Mephibosheth did nothing to earn his place. He simply accepted the invitation that was given. The same is true for us. Our place at God’s table is not based on our strength, beauty, or merit, but on the kindness of the King. Through Jesus, the broken are made whole, the rejected are welcomed, and the outsider becomes family.

At David’s table, Mephibosheth belonged because he was chosen. You, too, are chosen. Your brokenness doesn’t disqualify you. In fact, it becomes the very place where God’s grace shines brightest. He prepares a table for you, not in spite of your past, but in full knowledge of it and redeeming it through His love.

REFLECTION

Pray through a list of people you may know who need a relationship with Jesus. Can you welcome someone to your table this weekend and share the love of Jesus with them?
