Head Scratcher — The Canaanite Woman - Monday
Today’s Verse
Mark 7:24a
And from there he arose and went away to the region of Tyre and Sidon. And he entered a house and did not want anyone to know… (ESV)
Have you ever had an unexpected encounter with someone at a time when all you want to do is enjoy some peace and quiet, and perhaps take a nap? Perhaps you just finished a twelve-hour shift or you finally got your fussy baby to bed. Well in my situation, I had just finished a LONG day at work and was already looking forward to going home, sitting on the couch with my dog, and drinking a very large Diet Coke; but as I was leaving the building, a young woman, obviously distressed, approached me and asked if I had time to talk with her. Thoughts raced through my mind. Do I explain the business day is over and ask her to come back the next day? But what would Jesus do? (Isn’t that what we should ask?)
Well, coincidentally, Jesus and His disciples had a similar situation. They had just entered the region of Tyre and Sidon, taking a break from those pesky Pharisees who were constantly challenging them and the crowds of people who were always around wanting a miracle or two. All this group of weary travelers wanted to do was remain incognito and rest. But then… a Canaanite woman came out of nowhere and asked Jesus for help.
At first, it appeared as though Jesus was reluctant to stop and assist the woman. Perhaps He, too, was thinking, “Could we visit tomorrow?” But no… not our Jesus. He and His disciples settled in, talked with the woman, and heard her story. This week, we will learn a little more about this woman who displayed great humility and tenacious faith.
Oh, and my encounter with the young lady… Well, let’s just say that I didn’t head home until much later in the evening.
REFLECTION
Have you ever been reluctant to engage in a conversation only to realize how important it is to pause, truly listen, and encourage one another? I would encourage you to always pray to have “eyes to see and ears to hear” those the Lord has placed before you. Perhaps you will discover the joy that comes from providing comfort, encouragement, and support to another person.
