Head Scratcher — The Canaanite Woman - Wednesday
Today’s Verse
Hebrews 11:1
Faith is being sure of what we hope for. It is being sure of what we do not see. (NIRV)
Recently, I had the opportunity to teach in our K-2nd grade environment. If you have not had a chance to visit our kids' environments, I encourage you to come check them out. We have a great time learning about God’s Big Story, the Bible. Each week, we share a “big idea” for our children to embrace. That particular week, the big idea was “God is Trustworthy.” Although the day’s lesson was not about the Canaanite woman, it definitely had some very similar themes. We had Abram and Sarai, who were desperate to have a child and prayed to God for a family. They believed God was trustworthy and had faith that what God told them was true.
Boy, it sure would have been fun to have invited the Canaanite woman on stage and had her share with our kids about her faith. Can’t you just hear the kids' questions? “Mrs. Canaanite, how did you know Jesus could heal your daughter?” “Did you like to be called a dog?” “Were you scared to talk to someone you didn’t know?” And of course, “What kind of demons did your daughter have?” Oh boy, kids!
I know the kids would have welcomed the Canaanite woman into their environment and invited her to join in the fun of learning how faith isn’t wishful thinking, or hoping something is possibly true, or just having a good feeling about something. No, faith is a confident belief and trust in God! Our kiddos, just like the Canaanite woman, know that Jesus is someone we can believe and trust. Just as Jesus was faithful to the Canaanite woman and healed her daughter, He is trustworthy and faithful to each one of us.
REFLECTION
Wouldn’t it be great to have the faith of a child? Why don’t you pray with me the prayer our elementary kids lifted up that Sunday?
Dear God, You are trustworthy! Help me to remember Your Word and Your promises are true. We love you! Amen.
