Jesus — Man Born Blind - Friday
TODAY’S VERSE
John 9:35–38
Jesus heard that they had cast him out, and having found him he said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” He answered, “And who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?” Jesus said to him, “You have seen him, and it is he who is speaking to you.” He said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him. (ESV)
Our story closes with a simple but important conversation between Jesus and the (formerly blind) man. By this point, the religious leaders have cast him out, yet Jesus seeks him out, ready to replace what the world has taken with something far greater.
There are many interpretations of why Jesus says he has seen the man in verse 37, but the heart of them all is this: the man encountered the Son of Man before he could see clearly, and now he truly sees Him and worships without hesitation.
The man, once blind and marginalized, now fully recognizes the One who healed him. He sees Jesus and understands God’s heart more clearly than the proud, self-righteous Pharisees ever could. And here’s why: because he met the real Jesus.
Looking back at the contrast between John 8 and John 9, the Pharisees rejected Jesus even after hearing and seeing Him firsthand. The blind man, however, responds with worship and faith. To me, humility seems to be the main difference. While the leaders couldn’t risk believing in Jesus, this man could. He really illustrates 2 Corinthians 12:9, where we’re told that God’s power is perfected in weakness.
God’s work often shows up in ways we don’t expect and in places where we feel weak or cast aside. The very things the world dismisses or rejects can become the platform for God’s work in our lives. The man’s story reminds us that seeing and recognizing Jesus doesn’t come from our status or the right arguments; it’s often a willingness to respond to God’s work in our lives.
When we meet and experience Jesus, even in our weakness, everything changes, and that’s something I want you to take with you as we close out our week together.
