Jesus — Wedding at Cana - Monday
TODAY’S VERSE
John 2:5
His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” (ESV)
My favorite wedding movie of all time is the 1991 version of The Father of the Bride. Steve Martin plays George Banks, who experiences all the trials and tribulations of marrying off a beloved daughter while counting the emotional, physical, and financial costs. Along the way, he hires a wedding planner named Franck Egglehoffer, played by Martin Short. Franck’s an avid planner with a taste for the most expensive things in life.
Weddings are a big deal and a booming industry in our country, but they pale in comparison to first-century Jewish weddings as we see in John 2. Weddings lasted an entire week, and if the groom's family ran out of wine, it could have led to a lawsuit and small-town rumor-mill shame for generations. And so, when Jesus’ mother tells him the wedding planners have run out of wine, he’s expected to do something about it.
Jesus was Mary’s firstborn son, and as a firstborn son myself, I feel a certain call to duty to make sure that what my mother wants to happen, happens. In communicating her expectation to Jesus to help rescue the wedding from the horrific shame of a nightmare blunder, she gives the greatest advice anyone can ever give. She tells the attending servants of the wedding feast, “Do whatever he tells you.”
This week, we’ll draw several points out of the wedding scene framed up in John’s gospel from chapter 2, verses 1-11, but the first and most important point to make this week is that if we do whatever Jesus tells us to do, we will never go wrong.
In every situation in life, we will be blessed now and into eternity by doing what Jesus tells us to do. The best way to know what Jesus would have us do in every situation in life is to spend time with Him every day. By reading His Word, meditating on its Truth, and talking with God in prayer, we will develop a keen awareness of exactly what Jesus wants us to do every day.

PRAYER
Father, please show me today how I can do what Jesus would have me do today, through the power of your Holy Spirit. I pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
