The Medicine Cabinet: Laugh Often — Wednesday

Proverbs 27:17
Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another. (ESV)

A few weeks ago, we held a volunteer appreciation night for our Music Team volunteers. I have plenty of takeaways from that event, but one of the biggest ones is how important good, healthy community is. As volunteers arrived, the lobby was filled with smiles and hugs and introductions and laughter. During dinner, the tables were filled with good conversation. The same could be said every Sunday before and between services in our “green rooms,” where folks who love music and believe in the Lord come together to serve the church and enjoy community with each other.

The Bible says, “Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.” We were not created to do life in isolation. God created companionship and community when He created mankind, and that same intention remains true for us today. In Romans 1:12, we’re told that in community, we can encourage each other’s faith. 1 Peter 4:8-10 tells us that we’ve all received gifts that we can use to serve one another. That means that each of us was created with various gifts that complement each other and help us bring out the best in each other.

So what is your gift? How can you serve others? Maybe the Lord gave you a witty sense of humor, and your gift is making others laugh and adding to the joy we focused on yesterday. Maybe you have a talent that you could teach to others, or you have the gift of leadership and could use that gift to raise up future leaders. Maybe you have the gift of hospitality and give others a comfortable sense of rest when you open your home to them.

Rest assured, God has uniquely blessed you with gifts to be used for His glory and to serve and encourage other people!

Wednesday’s Reflection

Take some time today to identify how you can serve people with what He’s given you. If you’d like to see the opportunities that are available to serve here at Southland, check out our volunteer page!
