Why Not Now: Strengthening My Relationship with Jesus - Friday

Luke 10:42b
Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her. (NIV)

Jesus told a story once that went kind of like this. A fella ran across a box full of valuable treasure in a field one day. He realized it was hidden and unnoticed by the owner of the field. He then went and sold all he had and bought the field. The Kingdom of God is like this. Upon discovering Jesus, when we give up everything else and accept Him as our King, we gain infinitely more than we once had.

Mary got it! She sat at Jesus’ feet, and no matter what was going on around her, she just soaked up all He had to say. Her sister Martha was busy getting everything ready for Jesus and everyone else at the house, but Mary ignored all the hustle and bustle because she was with Jesus!

Jesus is THE most important relationship. Whether we recognize His value or not, He is the only one worthy of all our attention and affection. Mary got it, and Jesus validated her choice in the face of her sister Martha’s rebuke. All week long, I’ve owned up to my propensity to be just like Martha. I’m good at being busy and bad at sitting at the feet of Jesus.

Fortunately, Jesus still loves me and has grace for my consistent adventures in missing the point. As I reflect on today’s verse, I learn by seeing Mary sit at Jesus’ feet. I am glad this was not taken from her. I also learn from Martha's mistakes. If you are like Martha (and me), it’s not too late to re-engage with Jesus and put Him first in your life.

Friday’s Reflection

Today, block out all the distractions and hang out with Jesus.
