Storm Warning: Storm Shelter — Friday
Psalm 23:1
The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. (NIV)
Psalm 23 is a well-known and commonly read psalm, but it’s my personal favorite. I love how David, the writer of this psalm, begins with a simple and truthful declaration: “The Lord is my shepherd.” If God is a shepherd, then we must be the sheep, right? Well, what does a shepherd do for their sheep? A shepherd feeds the sheep, guides the sheep, and protects the sheep from predators. Because of this, David boldly declares that he lacks nothing. Why? Because he knows his Good Shepherd will guide, protect, and provide for him.
Isn’t it comforting to know that during the midst of life’s struggles, we have a Shepherd to run to? We have a God who is ready to guide us, protect us, and provide for us always. You might remember two weeks ago when Scott referenced a number of things that people run to when times get tough: “There aren’t enough bottles in the universe to satisfy the longing of your soul… there’s not enough sexual pleasure in the world to ease your pain… a hand of the surgeon can never deliver the restoration that you desire.” There was more that he listed (you can listen to it again here at minute 43:47–45:20), but that brief overview captures the heart of it. The truth is, there is nothing that we could run to in the middle of a storm that will protect us like God. There is nothing but God that can satisfy us to the point where, like David, we can confidently declare, “I lack nothing.”
