Storm Warning: Storm Shelter — Monday

Psalm 71:1
I run for dear life to GOD, I’ll never live to regret it.
(MSG)

Do I have any fellow classic rock fans here with me at Southland? I might ignite a fiery debate by stating this, but I believe one of the greatest songs ever written is Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” which debuted in 1975. The emphatic rock song not only has an extremely catchy rhythm, but the lyrics conjure up feelings of being free, letting go, and riding off to the great unknown. Perhaps the song's most famous line is, “Baby, we were born to run!” Sorry, but I can’t promise that line won’t get stuck in your head all day. Now, I’m not sure ‘The Boss’ (Bruce Springsteen) intended to ignite a theological discussion with his 1970s greatest hit, but it does often lead me to the question: Is it true? Were you and I born to run? If so, were we born to run from something or run to something?

If you had a chance to listen to Jon’s message yesterday, then you likely gathered that our topic for this week’s devotionals will be centered around seeking shelter when the storms of life come. I say when and not if, because the storms of life always come, and for some, they never leave. With that in mind, let me circle back to my question from the first paragraph: Were we born to run from something or run to something? I would argue that both are true. We have an innate desire to run from the troubles or storms of life and run to people, places, or things that we believe will protect us. Who or what are you running to when the storms come? Like the Psalmist, I hope to not just run to God, but to sprint to Him.

Monday’s Reflection

Listen to this song, and choose today to run to God!
