Toy Stories: Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head — Beauty and Mystery vs. Boring and Monotonous - Tuesday

TODAY’S VERSE

Song of Songs 7:5-6

…Your hair is like royal tapestry; the king is held captive by its tresses. How beautiful you are and how pleasing, my love… (NIV)

“I can't believe Nate let you drive his car while he’s gone!” she squealed as the warm breeze hit her face.

“He told me not to let it sit in the garage!” I smiled, revving the engine as we turned onto Harrodsburg Road. This house-sitting gig had its perks.

My friend, Nate’s Mustang really was the perfect car for summer—and summer love. As I rolled the convertible top down, Hannah’s long locks flowed in the wind. She was stunning. As the sky turned purple, she gazed up at the sunset. “So pretty,” she whispered. Laying it on thick, I looked back at her. “I was just thinking the exact same thing, honey...”

If that story doesn’t make you wanna throw up, this next one might. Fast-forward two years later. Hannah and I were newlyweds and had just settled into our new apartment together. Everything was going great, until one day Hannah called me into our bathroom. “Babe, our shower is draining really slow…” I walked in to find a trough full of standing water mixed with shampoo, lazily creeping towards the bottom. When it all finally trickled out, I reached my hand down the drain, extracting multiple wads of thick, wet hair from it as I did.

“What do you think is wrong with it?” my wife asked innocently. Reaching for the Drain-O, I did my best not to gag. “Nothing, babe…I married a Border Collie—that’s what’s wrong with it...”

Based on his description, Solomon's wife was beautiful like Hannah. However, I’m also convinced he probably never cleaned her bathtub! I don’t say that as an attack on romance—in fact, I appreciate his excitement. However, what I also recognize is that the excitement stage doesn’t last forever.

A lot of marriages begin in the convertible stage: there’s beautiful sunsets, her hair is blowing in the wind and neither of you have a care in the world. But eventually (in any marriage) the excitement fades, your season of life changes and the beautiful hair that once captured your heart is now holding you captive in her bathroom for over an hour.

But just because there are days when marriage is less than exciting, that doesn’t make it (or her) any less beautiful.

At any stage, marriage is a beautiful gift from God that should be celebrated—even when things get a little hairy.

APPLICATION

How have you seen the excitement/newlywed stage negatively impact our culture’s perception of marriage?

PRAYER

Say a prayer today specifically for couples headed towards marriage and ones who are newly married.
