2 Timothy 2:10 Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. (ESV)

While reading through some material on GlobalFrontierMissions.org, I came across the story of Hudson Taylor—probably one of the most famous Christian missionaries of all time. He changed the way we think about outreach in the 19th century and was the founder of the China Inland Mission (CIM). At the time, most missionary work in China was focused on the coastal cities, but Hudson felt called to the remote, rural, and inland regions.

He landed in Shanghai in 1853, learned the language, adopted the dress, and immersed himself in Chinese culture. He chose to live among the people he served—something that was very unconventional at the time. Hudson believed that the churches he planted should be fully indigenous and led by Chinese leaders who could eventually reach their own people for Christ. In his view, this was the best way to build a sustainable, long-term ministry. His approach helped Christianity spread widely across the country.

Hudson faced many challenges—from financial difficulties to illness, and heartbreaking personal losses. His first wife passed away in 1870 after a long illness, and he lost several of his children in infancy. Still, Hudson Taylor stayed the course and is largely responsible for the strong Christian presence in China that still exists today.

His life reminds us that when we share the Gospel with someone, it’s always a good idea to start by learning about them and where they come from. Ask questions. Show real interest. “Learn their language,” so to speak—and then help them see how deeply they are loved by Jesus.
