Unsung Heroes: Zeal of Timothy — Friday
2 Timothy 1:4-5
Recalling your tears, I long to see you, so that I may be filled with joy. I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also. (NIV)
A few days ago, we talked about “zeal,” what it means, and why it’s important to our walk with Jesus. I love that we get to talk about zeal because it has been something that the Lord has been impressing upon my heart for the past few months. At my desk, I have a bunch of sticky notes lying around with different scriptures and prayers that remind me of God’s goodness. They also serve as a reminder of why I do what I do: to go and make disciples. On one of my sticky notes, I have a prayer that says, “Lord, give me zeal for your Church!”
In the routines and rhythms of everyday life, it can be so easy to become complacent and get lost in all the tasks that need to get done. When we are in a posture of complacency, we are prone to a spirit of apathy, which is the very opposite of zeal. If our faith is to be sincere before Jesus, it is so important to keep His calling at the forefront of our minds—a calling He highlights so clearly in Matthew 28:19. “Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” No matter what your job or vocation is, we are all tasked with this same calling. When days are long and you find yourself succumbing to complacency or apathy, remember that ALL of this is for God’s glory. And if it’s for Him, it’s worth it.
Friday’s Reflection
Ask God to give you the strength each day to do what He has asked of you, no matter how big or small the task. Ask Him to continually give you zeal and joy for His calling and His purpose for your life!
