Whac-A-Mole: Humanism — Friday

Psalm 8:3-4
“When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?” (NIV)

Last March, I went on a trip to Seattle with a few of my friends. We had a loose itinerary planned out, but our main goals were to start out in the city to go to a concert, see the Space Needle, drink some good coffee, and then travel farther north to stay in a yurt (basically a round tent) and hike the Northern Cascades. Two days in, everything was going according to plan… until our plans to drive to the Northern Cascades were interrupted by an unexpected trip to the ER. By the very grace of God, we were released from the ER late that night and decided to take the risk and drive up to the cascades.

Road after windy road stretched before us, and after a few close calls, we made it to our yurt. After our long day, we were so excited for a full 8 hours of sleep, even if the location of the yurt looked straight out of a horror movie. However, we were in for a rude awakening when we walked inside. Our yurt had electricity, but no source of heat other than a small wood-burning stove, and the temperature that night was well below freezing. Imagine four tired, cold, and frustrated girls trying to light a fire with a handful of flimsy matches in a yurt illuminated by a few string lights and cell phone flashlights, and you get the picture.

Our attempts at lighting the fire were incredibly unsuccessful, and we conceded to toughing out the night with some heated blankets. After a few hours of sleep, we woke up the next morning to find out that a major snowstorm was headed our way that day, so we packed up our things, said an overjoyed goodbye to the yurt, drove back into the city, found a hotel, and spent the remainder of our trip enjoying each others’ company and continuing to explore the city. Although it seemed like our plans were turned upside down, in reality, the Lord was providing for us and taking care of us in the midst of it all, from the ER trip to the cold yurt.

The Creator of the universe is mindful of us. He holds us in the palm of His hand in the midst of the uncertainty of life. Rest in the fact that He cares for you and that He follows every detail of your life, from crazy trips to life-changing trips to any and all decisions. He loves us and cares for us.

Friday’s Reflection

When we surrender to Jesus, He takes care of us. Spend some time today reflecting on the ways the Lord has taken care of you when life has been chaotic and thank Him for His steadfastness.
