Whac-A-Mole: Humanism — Wednesday
Daniel 4:34
“At the end of that time, I, Nebuchadnezzar, raised my eyes toward heaven, and my sanity was restored. Then I praised the Most High; I honored and glorified him who lives forever. ‘His dominion is an eternal dominion; his kingdom endures from generation to generation.’” (NIV)
One of my roommates is great with directions. Not only is she very intuitive with maps, but she can also drive (or be driven) to a place one time and then always remember how to get to that place, no matter where she is. I, on the other hand, am terrible with directions.
I’ve lived in Lexington almost my entire life and still have to use Google Maps everywhere I go. Something even more embarrassing is that I’ve had to use directions to get to our Nicholasville Campus almost every day for the past two years because I can’t remember some of the turns. There are times when my roommate and I are in the car together, and my natural instinct is to pull up Google Maps and enter the address of where we’re going. But most of the time, she always knows where to go based on her memory. Regardless of who’s driving, she’ll know the way, but I still insist on pulling up my maps because I want to be in control and know where I’m going at all times (despite the fact that my internal GPS is practically nonexistent). However, the times I have trusted my roommate with directions, she has always gotten us where we need to be right on time because she knows the quicker routes that don’t always appear on wayfinding apps. Better yet, I find that I am less distracted and more at peace because I’m not constantly checking my maps to make sure I’m headed in the right direction. There is less chaos and more peace.
In the same way, you may yourself try to be in control of the future and your own circumstances. But when we trust God and His authority instead of relying on our own strength, His ways are better and higher every single time. We are not riddled by chaos, but restored by peace. We just need to accept the invitation of surrender and trust that He extends to us.
Wednesday’s Reflection
Take some time today and ask the Lord to reveal areas of your life that you have not yet entrusted to Him. Then, thank Him for His faithfulness, and ask Him to help you relinquish control and to replace any chaos you may feel with His peace.
