Weekend Scripture: 1 Samuel 17

Defiance without discernment is dangerous.

Scott guides us through 1 Samuel 17 as we look at the story of David and Goliath. In a world that often calls evil good and good evil, we are called to discern the times and boldly stand in opposition to the enemy. Goliath claimed defiance against men, but David discerned that he was defying the living God. God has already secured the victory. Through Jesus, our champion, we are more than conquerors. No matter the brutality of the battle, we have a bigger and better king who will see us through it.

Colossians 1:15-23 | The word preeminent isn’t one we use very often and it wasn’t used often when Paul wrote it. It’s a perfect word to describe a perfect Savior. Not only is creation in His hands, we are in His hands and because of that we are free to worship him.

James 3:2-12 | Controlling our words may be one of the most difficult things to do. The same mouths we praise God with also can be used to hurt and harm others. Understanding how powerful and dangerous words can be can also lead to using them for the ultimate good which is praising God.

Romans 12:1-2 | In order to act differently than those around us we have to first think differently than those around us. Paul tells us to present our bodies as a living sacrifice to God. What we do and don’t do with our bodies is an act of worship. In this message we will look at what the Bible has to say about our physical bodies and sex. We will learn that conforming to our culture only leads to brokenness and chaos while what Jesus calls us to leads to freedom and joy.

Matthew 22:34-40 | We were created to worship. When God becomes the object of our affection, allegiance, and attention, we discover the kind of fulfillment the world cannot supply. In this sermon we will learn why God is worthy of our worship and what happens when we love him with our whole being.

Psalm 14:1, Romans 1:18-23 | The Bible claims that based on the beauty and order we find in creation, there is no excuse for failing to worship our Creator. Unfortunately, people often choose not to acknowledge or worship Him. No other philosophy has created more death and destruction than the belief that there is no God. Acknowledging and worshiping our Creator brings humility and accountability to our lives.
