Faith — The Covenant - Wednesday
TODAY’S VERSE
Genesis 15:5
And he brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” (ESV)
One of my favorite things in creation is the stars. I grew up in the country, which meant that I got to see stars all the time. I would lie in the grass and try to count as many as I could, and I would still run out of numbers to give them! When I moved to the city, the stars were what I missed the most because they reminded me of the vastness of my God and the beauty of His promises.
After Abram expressed his frustration about not having a child yet, God took him to show just how big He really is. God lights up the sky with as many stars as you can imagine and tells Abram that he will be blessed with that many offspring. Can you imagine how cool that moment was? The Creator of the universe is changing the sky so that He can strengthen Abram’s faith in Him again. Our God is a promise-keeper, and He doesn’t plan to start breaking promises with Abram here. He won’t break His promises today, either.
Through Abram’s moment of doubt, God in His tender mercy helped Abram be restored. How gentle and kind a Father we have! God knew exactly what Abram needed in that moment, and He did it without shaming Abram for having doubts. Our God doesn’t shame us; He inserts Himself into our situation and gives us exactly what we need, which is His presence. God knows you and will give you the “God moments” you need to follow Him better.
To this day, the stars are still one of my favorite parts of creation. I am still reminded of how small I am and how big my God is, which is yet another tender mercy I get to witness.
APPLICATION
Remind yourself of the promises God has kept in Scripture. Read through those Scriptures and write down things you learn from each of them.
PRAYER
Take some time to pray about the doubt you may have in your relationship with the Lord. Ask God to restore your faith in Him. Ask for a moment that can only be from God.
