Fine Print: Serve Sacrificially — Friday

Mark 10:45
”For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (NIV)

Moms, wait staff, nurses, teachers, daycare workers, sanitation workers, cleaning staff at hotels, custodial staff, and many other professionals work as “servants.” Although that word commonly comes with a negative connotation in today’s culture, our verse today highlights Jesus’ perspective on it. These are noble professions. These professionals accomplish meaningful and important work. Remove them all tomorrow, and we descend down a nasty road quickly in society. These workers follow the example of Jesus because, while some of these individuals may need the money they acquire from their work, they have the opportunity to act like Jesus every single day.

In one of Jesus’ most poignant moments, He got up from a table with His disciples and went around the room washing their feet. He chose the least distinguished job and did it to set an example for His closest followers. Imagine Jesus as a guest at your house getting up to go and clean the toilets and scrub your dishes clean. For good measure, He goes out back and picks up your dog's lawn deposits. If you are like me, you’d be mortified to watch the Savior of the world clean your messiest messes, but that’s exactly what He did for His disciples. He scrubbed their nasty feet.

This week, we’ve talked about life lived on a downward trajectory. This isn’t a devotional series meant to make us ponder. It’s intended to make us move. My goal is that you can see what action step you need to take, and do it.

In the last few years, there is an action step like this I’ve worked to add to my life. It’s something that I won’t share because it’s a personal mandate that places me in the role of a servant, but I want you to receive the same vision for a service act, too. Thanks for reading this week, and I pray that we can all take one further step toward humility today and on into however many years ahead we have on this earth.

Friday’s Reflection

Pray and ask God to reveal a way you can serve like a servant. Now go enjoy serving in this way!
