Ephesians 2:13
But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. (ESV)
Imagine a girl from a small town in Eastern Kentucky who packs her bags and moves to the “big city” of Richmond for college. Everything feels different. There’s way more traffic, there are so many people, and everyone seems to have their own friends and know where they belong. She thought college would be an exciting new adventure, but instead she found herself feeling lonely, out of place, and wondering where she fit in.
Then someone in her dorm invited her to attend a local church. She started meeting people who welcomed her, encouraged her, and helped her grow in so many ways. For the first time in a while, she felt like she had found her people. But as she grew in her relationship with Christ, she realized something even more important: She had actually never been without a place to belong, because her identity had been in Jesus all along. If you hadn’t guessed already… I’m the girl in this story.
There’s an awesome truth that Paul reminds us of in Ephesians 2:13. Sin separates us from God, but through the blood of Jesus, we’ve been brought near to Him. We don't have to earn our place at His table, prove that we’re good enough, or change ourselves to deserve His love. Jesus has already made a way for us to belong to Him.
Sometimes, we spend so much time searching for our people, our purpose, or our place in this world that we forget the most important truth: Our identity should only be found in our Heavenly Father. Friends, campus ministries, churches, and small groups are wonderful gifts God uses to remind us that we aren't alone, but those things don't give us our identity.
Whether you're moving to a big city, starting a new job, walking through a difficult season, or just feeling like you don't quite fit in, remember this: You’re not forgotten. You’re not an outsider. And you’re not alone.
APPLICATION
Write Ephesians 2:13 on a sticky note and place it somewhere you’ll see as a daily reminder. Remember that your worth isn't determined by how well you fit in, or whether you feel like you belong. Your identity is found in God. You may spend a season searching for your people, but know that you’ve already been brought near to the One who knows you, loves you, and calls you His own.
PRAYER
Father, thank You that I’ve been brought near to You by the blood of Jesus. Thank You that I’ll never have to earn my place at Your table. Help me to be able to see those around me that also may be feeling lonely or forgotten, so that they can experience the belonging that comes only from knowing You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
