Jesus — Wedding at Cana - Wednesday

TODAY’S VERSE

John 2:6-7

Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. (ESV)

As a kid, I remember a scandalous (to my ears) song that was catchy and designed to kill time. “99 bottles of beer on the wall, 99 bottles of beer, take one down, pass it around, 98 bottles of beer on the wall….” On and on the song goes until there are 0 bottles of beer on the wall, and the suggestion is sung, “Go to the store, buy some more, 99 bottles of beer on the wall.” As a child, I knew I wasn’t supposed to drink beer, and 99 bottles seemed like a lot; hence, the “scandal” of the song I learned in my youth.

On Sunday, we learned that Jesus made approximately 2,000 4-oz glasses of wine to be served. This would make about 315 bottles of wine. That’s a lot of wine, and just think what an incredibly annoying song we could sing about it!

It is clear from our Bible story that when Jesus makes wine, its quantity and quality are remarkable. The master of the feast is confused when tasting the wine because, usually, the best was served first, followed by the cheaper stuff. In this instance, the best stuff wasn’t so “best” because what Jesus created was better than the best. The volume and quality both speak to the essence of what Jesus provides—an abundant life.

In this miracle, we get a glimpse into an important reality: “In Jesus’ kingdom there is more than enough.” As Scott said, “Again, the point of this story isn’t about drinking wine or not drinking wine. It’s about the kingdom, and in the kingdom there is more than enough GRACE for everyone.” Our God is a God of abundance. There is no limit to his provision. His Kingdom is greater than we could ever imagine. As described in a modern worship song, “His grace is an ocean,” and we are figuratively sinking in it.

As we begin today, let’s take a moment to reflect on the abundant and limitless grace of Jesus.

APPLICATION

Close your eyes and picture the ocean. Imagine the expanse as far as you can see. Now imagine looking up from the ocean into the heavens. Consider the vastness of God’s grace provided to us by Jesus’ finished work on the cross as greater than the sea and the heavens combined.

PRAYER

Father, thank you for the abundant grace of Jesus. Thank you that Jesus died for me and provided saving grace as vast as the ocean and as high as the heavens. Thank you for being more than enough for me.
