Jesus — Wedding at Cana - Thursday
TODAY’S VERSE
Revelation 19:9a
And the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.” (ESV)
There are three things that have made for the best meals I’ve ever had. One is simply hunger. Whether it was a long day of work or travel, a hunger sets in so deeply that whatever you eat tastes amazing. It could be a cheap frozen pizza, but you are so hungry that it tastes better than anything you’ve eaten before. Another component of the best meals I’ve had is the quality of the ingredients and the skill of the preparation. I had a steak with a portobello mushroom at a nice restaurant once, and it was so good I couldn’t tell which had more flavor: the mushroom or the steak. They were both AMAZING! The last ingredient that makes a meal fall into the “best” category is a good meal shared with great friends and family. The people seated at the table make the food somehow taste better. The joy, laughter, richness of conversation, and sharing of life are components of some of the best meals I’ve ever had.
Now imagine a moment when all three of these things come together at once. This will happen. We don’t know when this day will come, but it will happen. In the book of Revelation, John describes a meal called the “marriage supper of the Lamb.” It’s a supper that will involve food with ingredients LITERALLY from Heaven. On top of this, the skill required to prepare this food is unmatched on Earth. It will include people we love who are now fully at peace and whole in the presence of Jesus Christ Himself. The joy and laughter that will be shared are unmatched in this life. And perhaps most importantly, our gnawing hunger will be fully relieved in the food, but more so in the reality that there is now no more crying, pain, death, mourning, suffering, tragedy, or fear. It will be the greatest moment of our entire lives, and it all happens around a table, a wedding feast table.
In John 2, when Jesus’ wine was presented to the master of the ceremony, he remarked that the best had been saved until now. This is our third application point from Scott’s sermon, “Jesus saves the best for now.” We are all invited to this feast. We’ll realize that no matter how well things may have gone at times in this life, the life that is to come is truly the best. The invitation is open to us all, and like the master of the banquet, we will all experience the best that has been saved for that triumphant occasion.
APPLICATION
Plan a meal within the next week that you can really enjoy. Make it an act of worship to savor the quality of the food, the company, or the satisfaction of sustenance after an extended time of hunger. And bonus points for those who can combine two or more of these components.
PRAYER
Father, we long for the marriage supper of the Lamb. Give us resilience to follow Jesus, no matter what, until that day. Jesus, please come quickly.
